Create a proposal and pitch for a media product

Magazine Proposal

Task 1: Create a proposal for a media product
Learning Outcome 1: Be able to create a proposal with sample materials for an original media product to a client brief. (P1, P2, M1)

Objective:

Sound of North London's objective is to provide people living in the area with information on the ocal grime scene and other music available to them. The magazine will focus on upcoming and current artists, genres and the best places around North London to see live music. Using this information we hope that people living in the area will attend more live gigs and support local artists to help them become bigger.

Concept:

The magazine is called Sound of North London because it gives the consumer a rough idea what the magazine is going to be about. It is intended to be a informative music magazine featuring guides, articles, information about gigs and competitions for consumers to enter for fantastic prizes. The particular genre of music for this magazine is grime however we will put bits of other music genres in North London to spread to a wider audience and perhaps convince fans of other genres to also like grime as that's going to be the main genre of the magazine. We plan for the magazine to be distributed monthly as there will be a lot of information which means better value for money, the magazine will be able to be found in the magazine sections of supermarkets, local shops across North London and online on our website where you can pay for a yearly subscription which means you can pay for all magazines in the year which will be slightly cheaper than buying the magazine monthly, people that buy a yearly subscription also get a discount on the first ticket for a grime event they buy in North London with a code that will be provided with the subscription. Prices of the magazine will be £5 and for consumers using a yearly subscription will cost £50 which means essentially they will be saving two months worth of money which can be paid in monthly installments or all up front.

The magazines production process will not cost very much as I think it would be a good idea to use recycled paper as the pages to save money, the magazine will be funded by the consumers buying the magazine, and advertisements. Adverts to do with grime such as artist’s new albums and concerts will be prioritized then adverts to do with other genres of music and then finally random advertisements if there is room left over but it will cost more than music adverts. We plan to have a page full of sponsors from grime artists and venues in North London advertising their concerts and will get our magazine to be sold at the concerts. which will hopefully bring in revenue and help the magazine make profit here is an example below.

The reason behind my concept is that there is a gap in the market on grime music in North London magazines and it's a very popular music genre within the area and there is no magazines on it, it will give people and insight of what's going on in the area and the grime scene and grime artists and venues will want to advertise themselves so grime fans can see them like. The reason we have offered a yearly subscription is so consumers won't have to go out and purchase the magazine, they can pay it all upfront or in monthly instalments by card online so they won't even leave the house to get it, it will be delivered to them for a cheaper price as well. The reason for using recycled paper is so that we are ethical and have a good reputation to start with and the reason for prioritising grime adverts is because the magazine is specifically for grime fans so they will be looking for adverts for events they will want to see rather than adverts that are not interesting for the consumers.

Audience:

The primary target audience is grime fans in North London as this is the specific genre of the magazine and we hope we can get them to go to more grime gigs in the local area.

The secondary audience will be people who live in North London who are fans of other genres of music as some articles of other genres will be included in the magazine to spread to a wider audience and hopefully they will also become fans of grime.

Thirdly it would be just people who live in the area and are looking for a new genre of music to enjoy.

Audience Demographics:

There isn't a specific demographic we are aiming at, however grime is listened to by more lower class people not just based on income it's also a lot of youth that are now in to grime as it is a growing genre.

Unique qualities our group possess to bring this magazine to fruition:

I am a big fan of grime myself and sometimes go to gigs, but sometimes they aren't always full and I don't think people know enough about the grime scene in North London and feel people may think it's for lower class people and a bit chavy, however it's becoming popular in the younger generation and there isn't many magazines on the genre so it is a gap in the market that could potentially become big.

Distribution of the magazine:

The magazine is going to be distributed in corner shops and supermarkets in North London, they will also be sold at live grime events in North London, we will also offer subscriptions for £50 a year which will include a welcome package to encourage customers to get the package. They will be distributed at live grime events and many others, we would like to distribute it in the best ways possible that are still affordable

The reason I have chosen to distribute in this way is that the magazine is specifically targeted at grime fans in North London and it wouldn't be logical to sell it elsewhere as North London is the area that it's specifically targeted to, the reason for selling them at grime events is that we advertise them and grime fans will be there who the magazine is targeted at.

Marketing of the magazine:

We will market the magazine by advertising online on social media as this is a cheap method of advertising and many people use social media so a lot of people will be able to see the advert, we can also produce a radio ad so people can hear it whilst they are in the car, we can also offer promotions to the customers by offering discount codes for live events in North London. We will market the magazine in the most effective ways possible, we will advertise the magazine in the most effective places, we hope to produce billboards around all of the North London areas along with advertising on bus routes which drive around North London so everyone who uses public transport in the area who wants to be occupied while travelling can purchase the magazine, and when we eventually gain enough revenue we could potentially sponsor grime events so our names get mentioned in them and grime fans can hear the magazines name whilst at grime events which will spread awareness of our magazine.

The reason I have chosen to market in this way is that advertising on social media is very cheap and still very effective as many people use social media, offering discount codes would tempt customers to buy the magazine as they would be getting event tickets cheaper which would make them happy. Potentially advertising on billboards in North London is effective as everyone would see it as they are walking down the street and advertising on public transport would be good as people have nothing to do whilst being on it.

Locations and grime artists that play in North London:

  • AJ Tracey, Dingwalls, Chalk Farm Road
  • Turn It Up (event) The Lockside Lounge, West Yard Lock
  • Murkage Dave, The Lock Tavern, NW1

Ideas for articles:

  • Interviews with grime artists in North London
  • Upcoming gigs in the area
  • Good venues to see live music in the area
  • Latest updates on artists lives
  • Young grime artists coming through hoping to make it big
Inspiration for my layout:

The first two front covers are all big music magazines and it shows in all of them that the main image overlaps with the masthead of the magazine, it also has what features in the magazine along the sideline of the magazine and all artists on the front cover have their name written in big eye catching writing at the side of them.Barcodes are also in the bottom left.

The second two magazines are local music magazines which also has similar layouts to the bigger music magazines, however where the big music magazines have their own articles on the sideline, the local magazines have advertisements along the sideline this is properly in order to help fund the magazine

Magazine title with font:

This is the title of the magazine with a font called Capture It, I thought this was a good font for the as the style of it is one that could catch peoples eye, and the colour of it stands out in front of the background blends in well so the consumers can read the title and also the map of North London behind it.

Proposed Layouts:

Although this was my proposed double page spread I hanged where it says the article title to the pull quote and I moved the pull quote to where it said article title as it looked better and more organised

This was my original plan for my front cover however, I changed a lot of it as I felt there was too much going on with too many side images and lots of adverts and across is what I ended up making it look like.
