P1 and M1: Explain different ideas for an original media product based on a client brief and discuss strengths and weaknesses of the ideas

I've been told in the client brief to pitch an idea for a North London music based genre magazine online and in print as there is a lot of music trending there currently and they want more people to in North London what's going on in the music scene there, e.g. let them know about upcoming artists and music in the area, if the magazine is successful it will be spread in to wider areas of London, the audience it will be aimed at is more youth, because in North London the grime genre is currently the most popular genre in the area for the younger generation so it is a good gap in the market to aim for, another demographic it will be aimed at is the C2DE category overall if it's a young grime magazine as young people don't work and have an income but if they do the will be having a minimal income.

Codes and conventions for music local magazines:

  • Colour Scheme
Idea 1:
Possible ideas for the magazine is a grime magazine for the youth of North London this is because grime is currently a very popular and growing genre in North London and there isn't very many grime magazines at the moment as it's reasonably new so it would potentially be a good gap in the market and bringing out a snapchat page so viewers can read part of the article then will have to pay to carry on reading. A negative of this could be is that a niche product is harder to sell and advertise as you obviously wouldn't be generating as big as an income as a mainstream magazine when it starts of as every music fan in North London would be suited to it.

Strengths of this idea is that grime is a growing genre in the North London area so it has potential to earn money as it's one of the more popular genres of the area. Another strength is that the magazine is aimed at a niche market meaning that we know specifically who we are targeting the magazine at and who our consumers are. There is also a gap in the market for this kind of magazine. Also there are a lot of venues in North London and festivals that host gigs and festivals that grime stars feature in so it's a good area to have it in.

Weaknesses of this idea is that their could be possibly other music genres that could generate more customers and bigger income, it's a risk as there isn't any other grime magazines in the area and it isn't 100% there would be a big following of the magazine. Another weakness of this idea is that there is not many other local music magazines and theres not many grime magazines in general so it's hard to think of a price and designs etc as you don't really have much competition. However this can also be seen as a strengh as there is a gap in the market for the product.

Idea 2:
Another possible genre is just a mainstream music magazine for the people in North London including the most popular genres and artists, an advantage of using this idea would be that it would have a wider audience and more people would be willing to buy the magazine compared to a niche audience. A disadvantage however is that there is many popular mainstream music magazines so you would need a lot of money to market it.

Strengths of this idea is that it doesn't really have a demographic and it is just aimed at music fans in general and it would have a following by everyone. It would also have more potential to make money as more people will want to read it. Another advantage of this is that there is lots of other magazines like this, although this means more of a competitive market it means you can get more ideas off of other magazines.

Weaknesses are that as it's mainstream there is many other magazines like this meaning we would be in a very competitive market, and we would be a low budget magazine competing against bigger budget magazines meaning we would have to offer a cheaper price with best content possible. Another weakness of this idea would be that in our other ideas we would want to have inteviews with current stars in our magazine and as this is a mainstream magazine with some of the biggest artists featuring in it, it is virtually impossible to be to get a hold of them.

Idea 3:

The third idea would be to release a niche pop magazine for North London just based on songs that North London pop artists produce. An advantage of using this idea is that although is specifically aimed at a audience  which means it will be niche pop is a very pop

Strengths of this idea is that pop is a popular genre so it can spread to a wider range of audiences other than just North London although it is particularly aimed at pop artists in North London. There isn't many of these magazines around in general as pop artists are usully on mainstream music magazines and there is not really any niche pop magazines that go in to depth about a communities local stars.

Weaknesses of the idea is that although it is a niche magazine it still be considered as a very competetive market as some North London stars would feature in massive music magazines such as Adele, another weakness is there is not many of these magazines around so it would be hard to work out what price consumers of the magazine would find acceptable.
